How to play Shogi
Black moves first on 9 × 9. Most pieces may promote when moving from or into the last three ranks. Promotion is compulsory for pieces that would otherwise have no moves. Captures join your hand without promotion. Drop a captured piece onto an empty square; no dead-rank drops, two unpromoted pawns in a file, or immediate mate by dropping a pawn. Protect your king; no legal move loses. Fourfold repetition draws, except perpetual checking loses.

Is Shogi free to play?
Yes. Local tables and private online rooms are free to play. Online play needs an internet connection; rooms expire seven days after the last move.
