How to play Canasta
Two 54-card decks, including four jokers. Two players get fifteen cards and draw two; four players get eleven and draw one, sharing melds with the opposite partner. Meld matching natural ranks with at least two natural cards and at least three total; at most three wild twos/jokers, with no more wild than natural. Seven or more cards form a canasta. Opening melds total 15 below zero score, 50 below 1500, 90 below 3000, then 120. Take the entire discard pile only by immediately melding its top; a frozen pile requires two matching natural cards held. Wild cards block pickup and freeze the pile; black threes block pickup except a final meld. Red threes are set aside and replaced when drawn from stock. Black threes meld only when going out. End a turn by discarding one. Going out requires two canastas with two players, one with partners; premature going out loses the match. Natural canastas earn 500, mixed 300; going out 100, concealed opening 200. Red threes earn 100 each plus 400 for all four, negative without a meld. Melded cards score positive, held cards negative. Card values: joker50, A/2=20, 8–K=10, others5. Highest score reaching 5000 wins. Optional partner permission is not required.
