How to play Skat

Thirty-two cards, seven through ace. Middlehand speaks values to forehand, who holds or passes; rearhand then speaks to the survivor. If both speakers pass without a bid, forehand plays 18 or passes out. Declarer picks up the two-card skat and discards two, or plays from hand. Choose a suit, Grand (only jacks trump) or Null (lose every trick). Jacks rank clubs, spades, hearts, diamonds above suit trumps. Other suit/Grand cards rank A-10-K-Q-9-8-7; Null ranks A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7. Follow the effective suit; jacks belong to trump in suit/Grand games. Forehand always leads. Suit/Grand need 61 card points, including skat; Null ends in loss on declarer’s first trick. Value multiplies suit base (diamonds 9, hearts 10, spades 11, clubs 12, Grand 24) by matadors, game, hand and Schneider/Schwarz/open levels. Hand games can announce 90 points or all tricks. Null values are 23, hand 35, open 46, open hand 59. Lost or overbid games subtract twice their value, rounding overbids up to a sufficient base multiple. Highest score after eighteen hands wins. No Ramsch, Kontra or tournament bonus variant.
