How to play Thousand

A 24-card deck, nine through ace; strength is nine, jack, queen, king, ten, ace. Three active players receive seven cards and a three-card kitty. With four seats the dealer sits out and scores revealed kitty aces (50 each) and marriages. Two players receive ten cards each and choose one of two two-card kitties. The first active player opens at 100; bid in tens, no higher than 120 plus held marriages. Winner takes a kitty, gives each other active player a card (or discards two with two seats), then declares at least the auction bid. Follow suit and beat the winner when possible; if void, trump when held. Leading a held queen-king pair with the marriage declaration earns clubs 60, diamonds 80, hearts 100 or spades 40 and changes trump. Card points: ace 11, ten 10, king 4, queen 3, jack 2. Remaining kitty cards score for the last trick winner. Declarer makes or loses their contract; others round their points to tens. At 800, only declarer earns further points. First to 1000 wins, with declarer winning a simultaneous finish. The first bomb cancels freely; subsequent bombs award opponents 60 (40 with four seats). Four nines can request a redeal.
